The French Herbalist Center

Since 1880 this little boutique has existed to deliver a vast assortment of herbs, tinctures and essential oils to the people of Paris.

The Place de Clichy Herbalist Center of Paris was established in 1880. It is the oldest and largest herbalist shop in France. The shop is younger than the Louvre but actually older than the Eiffel Tower.

Two Doctors of Pharmacy trained as biologists and with Diplomas in Phytopharmacology and Pharmacognosis became the proprietors of the Place de Clichy Herbalist Center in 1993. In 1997 they opened a second shop on the opposite bank of the Seine (the river flowing through Paris) in the Latin Quarter.

Over time the shop had been owned and operated by botanist herbalists followed by general herbalists. Since the suppression of the Herbalist Diploma by the French Government in 1942 the Herbalist Shop has continued to function under direction pharmacists and chemists. The Herbalist Center is currently staffed by pharmacists.

Traditional Herbalist

The Place de Clichy Herbalist Center stocks more than 900 different species of medicinal plants from all over the world. There are various parts of plants that are useful in different instances. The roots, seeds, flowers, fruits, leaves or entire plant may be used to combat different symptoms.

The medicinal plants that are used are divided into the following groups:

Plants containing sugar,
Plants containing polysaccharides,
Plants containing tannin,
Plants containing glucosides,
Plants containing alkaloids,
Aromatic plants and
Resinous plants.

The Herbalist Center has its own particular formulas for specific diseases or symptoms. The plants, in correct doses; can act just as well against chronic or degenerative diseases as against acute symptoms caused by viral or bacterial infections. Medicinal plants can also act against inflammatory conditions, metabolic disorders, pathological cell proliferation, acute diseases, as well as for other health problems. The concentrates are selectively used in cases of acute diseases or symptoms and are used in the longer term if the symptoms persist or if a chronic disease is present.

The staff at Place de Clichy Herbalist Center are specialists in the extraction of active substances from medicinal plants. Using steam distillation they obtain the plants essence, the essential oils composed of triterpene molecules and complex molecules with an e nucleus. Extraction using absolute alcohol they obtain a tincture of active ingredients consisting of heteroside and alkaloids. Between the two modes of extraction we are able to obtain from any one plant, 100 to 300 different synergistically active substances. The Herbalist Center uses the synergism in their therapeutics.

The Place de Clichy Herbalist Center checks all the products they use; beginning from the harvesting of the medicinal plant, up to the finished product. All of their products based on medicinal plants are produced from biological agriculture and are completely organic. They contain no insecticides, pesticides, preservatives or colorings.

The products that are used most effectively; except in the case of certain liver diseases or of colitis, are ready-to-use liquid concentrate tinctures the formula of which are composed of: alkaloids, heterosides, tannins and triterpene derivatives from a single plant or a combination of plants.

These concentrates are prepared by the methods above and are determined qualitatively and quantitatively according to their use. The essences are dispersed in a vegetable oil solvent so that they can be incorporated into the concentrate.

The liquid concentrates of medicinal plants are determined allopathically. It is therefore a case of a genuine plant allopathy.
